Eco-renovation, Renewable Energy and Active Communities
We innovate through bio-based materials and biosolar roofs for the insulation and renovation of apartment blocks.
CONTEXT & CHALLENGES
70% of socialist-era neighbourhoods have not been renovated in 50 years
Post-war apartment block neighbourhoods in Bucharest are facing energy degradation, outdated infrastructure and a lack of community involvement.
1. Degraded buildings and infrastructure
Renovations based on polystyrene, without ecological approaches. There is a need for bio-based materials that improve thermal performance and support carbon sequestration.
2. Slow adoption of renewable energy
Lack of RES integration in multi-family apartment buildings. There is a need for an integrated approach at urban block level.
3. Inefficient governance
100% privately owned housing, with limited involvement from homeowners’ associations. There is a need for dialogue platforms and collaborative governance models.
FAVORIT+ addresses these challenges through integrated and replicable solutions.
INTEGRATED APPROACH
Three pillars for urban transformation
Each pillar operates independently and synergistically, together building the Climate Resilience Index of the Favorit Urban Block.
Nature
Bio-based renovation value chains using hemp, miscanthus and hay as ecological alternatives to polystyrene.
Green infrastructure, biosolar roofs and active carbon sequestration.
TECHNOLOGY
RES integrated at multiple scales: biosolar systems on the pilot block, microgrids in public space and smart urban furniture.
AI Digital Twin for urban energy optimisation and simulation.
COMMUNITY
Engaging multi-level stakeholders: homeowners’ associations, local authorities, universities and the private sector through new dialogue platforms.
New models of collaborative governance.
FAV-HUB
The heart of the neighbourhood: a former restaurant reimagined
A space open to everyone: citizens, researchers, public authorities and companies. A living lab, energy education centre and node of the local energy network.

Co-Creation Platform
Favorit Innovation Centre
The former Favorit restaurant becomes an active space for experimentation, visualisation and co-creation, open to all actors in Sector 6’s urban ecosystem.
